ARTIST IN RESIDENCE  ANTARCTICA

I must be the luckiest artist in the world having been selected as the 2022/23 Artist in Residence to the Antarctic!

This residency, awarded by Friends of Scott Polar Research Institute and hosted by The Royal Navy is normally one month long but, as an extra stroke of luck, was this year extended to 7 weeks. Problems with the ship's engine meant this was eventually curtailed to 5 weeks.

I left at the beginning of January, flew to the Falklands via an RAF airbridge flight and was then collected by HMS Protector for the rest of our voyage. We sailed to the Antarctic Peninsula where the ship went into action undertaking hydrographic surveys, and providing support to the research stations and I headed up to the crow's nest to make some art. I mostly made documentary paintings and drawings and I also took 3000+ photographs.

Over the next few months/years I’ll be working harder than ever to try and make something magnanimous of this extraordinary place.
